Seraikela-Kharsawan police have uncovered two organised vehicle theft gangs operating in very different terrains of the district, one in the industrial hub of Adityapur and the other in the forested Kuchai region in Jharkhand. The arrests reveal how property crime is spreading from urban clusters to rural interiors.

What stands out is the profile of those caught. Most of the accused are in their early twenties, with four minors among them. Investigators said that during questioning, several admitted to stealing motorcycles not only for personal use but also for resale in neighbouring areas.

Vehicle thefts are among the fastest-growing categories of property crime in Jharkhand, particularly in districts with busy industrial zones and highway networks. According to police officials, Adityapur’s expanding labour colonies and Kuchai’s remote villages have both become vulnerable to such gangs.

For victims, the theft of a motorcycle often means losing a means of livelihood. Many families in the industrial and agrarian belt rely on two-wheelers to commute to work or transport goods. “For a daily wage worker, losing a bike is not just about property but survival,” said a police officer familiar with past cases.

The twin operations this week brought some respite. Ten accused were arrested and four minors detained, while 17 stolen motorcycles and one pickup van were recovered. The gangs were tracked down following raids in Adityapur’s Tata-Kandra Road and during vehicle checks near Gopidih in Kuchai.

Police said the crackdown was part of a district-wide campaign against property crime. Teams were formed under the supervision of the Seraikela and Chandil SDPOs, with coordinated raids across multiple police station areas. Officials believe the arrests will help curb a surge in thefts reported over the past two months.

The arrested have been remanded to judicial custody, while the minors are being dealt with under juvenile law. Senior officers said further investigation would focus on tracing the resale networks and verifying whether the gangs have links beyond the district.
