A cloudburst late Monday night struck Karligadh in the Sahastradhara area of Dehradun, a popular tourist destination in Uttarakhand. The sudden downpour triggered heavy currents that swept away several shops, while two people were reported missing.

Officials said no major loss of life or large-scale damage has been confirmed so far.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said in a post on X that heavy rains had caused damage to shops, and added that the district administration, SDRF and police teams were carrying out relief efforts.

Rescue operations

Rescue work began immediately after the incident, with SDRF and NDRF teams rushing to the spot. Locals were evacuated to safer places during the night. Heavy machinery, including JCBs, has been deployed for ongoing relief and rescue efforts, while the search for the two missing persons continues on a war footing.

Authorities saidAuthorities said several shops on the riverbank were completely washed away, with estimated losses running into lakhs. However, swift action by the administration helped avert a bigger tragedy, ensuring the timely evacuation of residents.

After the cloudburst, the Tamsa river in Uttarakhand came in spate, and the Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple was inundated as heavy rainfall lashed Dehradun. Temple priest Acharya Bipin Joshi said, “The river started flowing heavily at 5 AM, the entire temple premises were submerged… This kind of situation had not taken place in a very long time… Losses have been incurred at various places… People should avoid going near rivers at this time.”

The priest reported that the sanctum sanctorum of the temple is safe and no human loss has been reported as of now, as per ANI.
