The incident traces back to January 26, 2018, when violence broke out between two communities during a Tiranga Yatra (tricolour rally) in Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh. Amid the clashes, 22-year-old Chandan Gupta was shot and later succumbed to his injuries, triggering widespread unrest and communal tension in the region for nearly a week.

The case was investigated and tried in a Special NIA (National Investigation Agency) Court in Lucknow. Out of the total accused, 28 individuals were convicted, while two were acquitted due to lack of evidence. Among those convicted, Salim, Wasim, and Naseem were identified as the main accused and were sentenced to life imprisonment.

On Tuesday night, Salim’s health reportedly deteriorated within the jail premises. He was rushed to the jail hospital, where he was declared dead. Preliminary investigations suggest he died due to illness, though the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after a post-mortem examination. Following the news, Salim’s family members departed for Lucknow to collect the body.
