The Yogi Adityanath-led government in Uttar Pradesh has taken a tough stance on protecting workers’ interests, initiating major action against erring contractors.

In this regard, the process of cancelling the licences of 203 contractors associated with 24 factories in Gautam Buddha Nagar has been initiated for violations of labour laws. Steps are also being taken to recover dues and blacklist the agencies concerned.

According to Additional Labour Commissioner Rakesh Dwivedi, several contractors whose workers were involved in acts of vandalism during recent protests have been identified.

He further stated that penalty notices amounting to ₹11,65,06,700 have been issued to contractors who violated labour laws and deprived workers of their rightful benefits. They have been directed to pay the dues to the workers.

Dwivedi added that the remaining contractors are being identified and strict action will be taken against them as well. He emphasised that the government’s intent is clear—any negligence or disregard for workers’ rights will not be tolerated.

The Additional Labour Commissioner also informed that, based on the recommendations of a high-level committee formed following dissatisfaction over wage increases, wages for workers in 74 scheduled employments in Gautam Buddha Nagar and Ghaziabad have been increased by 21 percent. The revised wages will be effective from April 1, 2026, and payments will be made between May 7 and 10. The new rates will apply equally to both contract and permanent workers.

It has also been clarified that no deductions other than EPF and ESI will be permitted from employees’ salaries. In case of violations, strict legal action will be taken against the concerned employer. The Labour Department has further stated that workers will be paid overtime at double the rate, along with all statutory benefits such as bonus and gratuity. In cases of delays or underpayment, both contractors and principal employers will be held accountable.

Meanwhile, industrial units in the district have begun complying with the guidelines issued by the state government regarding minimum wage increases. Various industry associations are playing an active role in ensuring full compliance.

These organisations are encouraging industrial units to adhere to government norms by sharing messages, audio, and video content through WhatsApp groups. Their efforts are contributing significantly to maintaining industrial harmony and peace in the district.
