Parties blame each other for sporadic violence in N Bengal
The Election Commission received over 100 complaints of violence and intimidation from three Lok Sabha segments, Cooch Behar, Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri.
The Uttar Pradesh government on Friday informed Supreme Court that it has extended the tenure of special Judge Surendra Kumar Yadav who is hearing the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition case. The case involves BJP veterans LK Advani, MM Joshi and Uma Bharti.
A bench of justices RF Nariman and Surya Kant perused the affidavit and office memo placed before it by the chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh.
Senior advocate Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for Uttar Pradesh, told the bench that they have complied with the Supreme Court’s order and extended the tenure of the special judge till he delivers the verdict in the Babri Masjid demolition case. “We are satisfied that the needful has been done,” the Supreme Court bench said while disposing of the matter.

The Supreme court, last month had directed the UP government to issue orders on the extension of tenure of the special judge and to consider his requests which included providing security to him. The development came after the judge, in a letter, appealed for protection.
The Babri Majid case pertains to the criminal trail against those who conspired and executed to bring down the mosque in Ayodhya on Dcember 6, 1992. The trial covers two cases, one against senior BJP leaders LK Advani, Uma Bharti, and seven leaders of Sangh parivar including Murli Manohar Joshi for making inciting speeches. The another case involves Kar sevaks who tore down the mosque, promoted hatred against a religion and rioting.
