King George’s Medical University (KGMU) continues its transformation into a premier hub of medical excellence in Uttar Pradesh. On Monday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath laid the foundation stone for a Rs 378-crore, seven-storey General Surgery building, which will feature cutting-edge robotic surgery facilities and world-class infrastructure. The project is slated for completion in two years.

According to KGMU spokesperson Prof KK Singh, the new building will be equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology and infrastructure. Key features include 12 modular operation theatres, a 12-bed ICU, a medical gas pipeline system, integrated networking, solar power systems, and robotic surgery units. These advancements are expected to significantly enhance the capabilities of KGMU’s General Surgery Department and improve patient outcomes.

The building’s layout has been thoughtfully designed to serve the needs of both patients and medical staff. The ground floor will accommodate the department head’s office, HRF store, patient waiting area, plasma sterilization unit, four operation theatres, a 16-bed post-operative ward, a pre-anaesthesia room, a power supply unit, and faculty rooms.

The first floor will house professors’ chambers, a surgery library, an endoscopy suite, a day-care OT, and a waiting area. The basement will include the main surgery office, canteen, changing rooms, record and committee rooms, seminar and lecture halls, a skill lab, linen room, and UG-PG section office.

Prof. Singh emphasized that the new infrastructure will be a boon for patients requiring complex and specialized surgeries. The advanced equipment is expected to drastically reduce wait times and increase the success rate of surgical procedures. Facilities like the ICU and post-operative wards will further strengthen patient care.

In a significant addition to the state’s healthcare infrastructure, CM Yogi Adityanath also inaugurated Uttar Pradesh’s first high-tech Orthopaedic Super-Speciality Centre at KGMU. This marks a major leap in advanced bone and joint care, offering comprehensive treatment for patients of all ages under one roof.

Housed in a seven-storey building, the Orthopaedic Centre offers a broad range of specialized services, including orthoplasty, spine surgery, sports medicine, paediatric orthopaedics, radiology, and pathology. Equipped with the latest medical technology, the centre aims to emerge as a leading institution for advanced orthopaedic care in the region.

KGMU Vice Chancellor Prof Sonia Nityanand said the new centre represents a major milestone in the university’s growth, enabled under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Developed at a cost of Rs 86 crore, the centre features 340 beds, including 220 for orthopaedic surgery, 60 for sports medicine, and 60 for paediatric orthopaedics. It also includes 24 High Dependency Unit (HDU) beds and 24 private rooms.

The facility houses eight major operation theatres, two minor OTs, and eight OPD rooms. Round-the-clock HRF-run pharmacy counters will ensure continuous availability of medicines and surgical supplies. All stages of patient care—from consultation and diagnosis to surgery and discharge—will take place within the same building, providing a seamless treatment experience.

Specialist doctors will be available for both sports injuries and paediatric orthopaedic conditions, ensuring focused, high-quality care. The facility is expected to serve not only residents of Lucknow but also patients from across Uttar Pradesh.

Beyond patient care, the centre will also support medical education and professional training. A dedicated training unit will ensure that doctors and paramedical staff stay updated with the latest techniques and technologies. The initiative is a testament to the Yogi government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and delivering modern, accessible, and holistic medical services to the people of Uttar Pradesh.
