Retired district judge Giribala Singh and her son Samarth Singh were sent to judicial custody till June 16 by a Bhopal court on Tuesday after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said it did not require their further custodial interrogation in connection with the death of actor-model Twisha Sharma.

The development comes as the agency continues its probe into the high-profile case that has drawn attention across Madhya Pradesh and beyond following allegations of dowry harassment and murder made by Twisha’s family. The 33-year-old Noida resident was found dead at her marital home in Bhopal on May 12, less than six months after her marriage to Samarth Singh.

According to advocates present in court, the judge directed that Giribala Singh and Samarth Singh be lodged separately from other inmates at Bhopal Central Jail and issued the necessary jail warrants.

Allegations of assault raised during hearing

Court proceedings also witnessed fresh allegations from Giribala Singh, who claimed that advocate Anurag Srivastava, representing Twisha Sharma’s family, had physically assaulted her son during proceedings at a court in Jabalpur.

She further alleged that Samarth Singh faced a threat to his life and sought protection from the court.

Responding to the allegation, Srivastava denied the charge and urged the court to verify the claim through CCTV footage available within the court premises.

“If such an incident occurred, the footage should be examined,” he submitted before the court.

Giribala objects to ‘media trial’

During the hearing, Giribala Singh also objected to what she described as a media trial surrounding the case.

According to submissions made before the court, she said media personnel continued to follow the family wherever they appeared and argued that such coverage was affecting their safety and public perception.

She also raised objections regarding the recent crime scene reconstruction exercise conducted by the CBI at her residence in Bhopal. Giribala questioned certain aspects of the procedure and expressed concern over visuals from the exercise appearing in the media.

The court hearing came a day after the CBI recreated the sequence of events at the family’s Bagmugalia residence, where Twisha Sharma was found hanging.

As part of the exercise, investigators reportedly used an 80-kg dummy to reconstruct the circumstances surrounding the death and cross-check statements recorded from the accused and witnesses during the investigation.

The agency informed the court that while it was presently seeking judicial remand, it reserved the right to seek further police remand if required as the investigation progresses.

What is the Twisha Sharma death case?

Twisha Sharma, a former model and actor from Noida, was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12.

The death was initially reported as a case of suicide. However, her family alleged that she had been subjected to dowry harassment and mental torture by her husband and in-laws and claimed that she was murdered.

The case gained further prominence after the Madhya Pradesh High Court cancelled the anticipatory bail granted to Giribala Singh while hearing matters related to the investigation.

The CBI investigation is continuing.
