West Bengal Minister and senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh on Tuesday, June 2, demanded that the registration of Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) be cancelled and its election symbol withdrawn, alleging that the former ruling party had inflicted irreparable damage on the state’s social and economic fabric during its 15-year tenure.

Addressing reporters, Ghosh launched a scathing attack on the TMC, accusing it of institutionalising corruption, extortion and political violence across the state.

“The Trinamool Congress should be banned immediately. Its registration should be cancelled and its election symbol withdrawn. The extent of damage this party has caused to society, the state and its economy leaves no justification for its continued existence,” Ghosh said.

Further, Ghosh alleged that corruption had become deeply entrenched during the TMC regime. “Money is being recovered from everywhere — beneath the ground, inside walls, even hidden in bamboo poles. Loot, extortion and brutal oppression have become the true identity of the Trinamool Congress,” he claimed.

Describing the TMC’s tenure as a “dark chapter” in Bengal’s political history, the BJP leader said the people had delivered a decisive verdict against the party during the 2026 Assembly elections in West Bengal, which saw BJP marking a historic victory in the state.

“The people deserve credit for taking the right decision at the right time and bringing a nationalist party to power. The TMC is steadily losing public support and credibility,” Ghosh said.

Ghosh’s remarks came in the backdrop of several incidents in which local TMC leaders and workers accused of criminal activities have allegedly been publicly humiliated after their arrests.

Referring to such incidents, he said people across the state were expressing their anger against what he termed “criminal elements” within the party.

His comments followed reports that Dipu, a close associate of TMC leader and former state minister Pulak Roy, was allegedly paraded with a rope around his waist in Uluberia of Howrah district after his arrest on May 29.

Similar incidents have reportedly been witnessed in areas including Sankrail, Shibpur and Kanchrapara.

Reacting to Ghosh’s demand, senior TMC leader and MLA Madan Mitra alleged that a conspiracy was underway to deprive the party of its iconic grass-flower election symbol. “There is a concerted effort to snatch away the Trinamool Congress symbol. We will respond to all such attempts at the appropriate time. Those who are winning elections on our symbol and then opposing the party will eventually disappear from the political landscape,” Mitra said.

The exchange marks the latest escalation in the bitter political confrontation between the BJP and the TMC in West Bengal.
