Tricolour Walk: 7,900 students honour martyrs in Delhi ahead of Independence Day

Nearly 8,000 students and young people marched from the Thyagraj Stadium to the National War Memorial on Sunday, each carrying the Tricolour to honour India’s freedom fighters and martyrs.

The ‘Tricolour Walk’, organised by the Delhi government’s Directorate of Education, was flagged off by Education Minister Ashish Sood as part of the 79th Independence Day celebrations in the national capital.

Speaking on the occasion, Sood said, “Ahead of the country’s 79th Independence Day, 7,900 youth carrying the Tiranga in their hands began the run from Thyagraj Stadium to the National War Memorial, where they will pay tributes to the martyrs. On the call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Delhi is turning Tirangamay.”

The minister also outlined upcoming Independence Day activities. “Delhi’s daughters will soon take to the streets on bicycles, proudly carrying the national flag. Later, thousands of students from Delhi’s schools will gather at Connaught Place beneath the national flag,” he said, adding that the time has come to make Delhi Tirangamay.

The event was held under the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign, a flagship initiative of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav spearheaded by the Ministry of Culture. The drive encourages citizens to hoist the national flag at their homes, turning the act into a symbolic gesture of unity and a people-led movement.

India will celebrate its 79th Independence Day on August 15, marking its freedom from British rule in 1947. The main ceremony will take place at the Red Fort, where the Prime Minister will hoist the Tricolour.
