Mourning the victims of the ghastly stampede at Karur during a rally of actor-politician Vijay on September 27, which claimed 41 lives, the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Tuesday adopted a condolence resolution. The House also observed a moment of silence to honour the victims.
The House also passed condolence resolutions mourning the demise of former Kerala Chief Minister and Marxist veteran V S Achuthanandan, former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren, former Nagaland Governor La Ganesan, CPI veteran Sudhakar Reddy, IAS officer Bela Venkatesan and AIADMK legislator Amul Kandasamy. The Speaker also read out obituary references on the passing away of eight former members of the House. The House was then adjourned for the day.

The short duration of the Assembly session, lasting till October 17, will have the supplementary Budget estimates for 2025-26 to be passed and a resolution on the Gaza genocide. It is expected to be stormy with the opposition preparing to corner the DMK government on the Karur stampede, with the Supreme Court ordering a CBI inquiry into it.
The opposition AIADMK and the BJP will also raise the ‘deteriorating’ law and order situation, among other things.
Meanwhile, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has announced that party president Vijay would adopt the families of the 41 victims. The actor had already announced Rs 20 lakh financial relief to each of the families.
Speaking to reporters in Delhi, the party general secretary (Election campaign management) informed that Vijay had decided to support the families by adopting them. He said the CBI inquiry into the tragedy was a victory for the party as it would bring out the truth.
After the September 27 tragedy, Vijay met party general secretary Bussy N Anand and other functionaries on Tuesday and held discussions on working out the modalities of visiting the victims’ families in Karur. The party had sought adequate police security for the visit.
