Following repeated allegations of EVM tampering by the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) after polling ended in West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday said the brouhaha was an evidence of TMC’s loss of public support.

“As the West Bengal elections progressed, the public support and morale of the Trinamool Congress continued to decline,” BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said.

“As soon as the polling process was completed peacefully and without violence, uneasiness within the Trinamool Congress appeared to increase. Following the exit poll trends, it seemed that the party’s balance and confidence were shaken. For the first time in the state’s electoral history, where election-related violence had often been a major concern, the elections were conducted without any major incidents of violence,” Trivedi said.

Meanwhile, Falta, which saw widespread violence during polling, remained under a thick cover of security forces.

According to reports, CRPF and RAF personnel were deployed in heavy numbers in the Falta area of the South 24 Paraganas ahead of the counting of votes in May 4. Locals also alleged that TMC activists were resorting to coercion to stop people from voting.

On West Bengal elections repolling, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar said, “… I think this number (15 booths) is very low and there has been no verdict on Falta… A lot of EVM buttons were tampered there by TMC… Anyway, let the voting conclude quickly and let the people’s verdict come on May 4, that is the most important thing…”
