BJP Kerala chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Friday, July 3, hit back at Chief Minister VD Satheesan and said that the Vizhinjam Port is the “biggest infrastructure project” in the state’s history.

In a post on X, Chandrasekhar wrote that it is Kerala’s “biggest Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project” and asked the Congress-led UDF government to publish a “White Paper” detailing exactly what this investment will deliver for the people of the state in terms of jobs, revenue and economic growth.

“That is the transparency and accountability Malayalees deserve,” he said.

On BJP-led NDA’s position on the matter, Chandrashekar said that they welcome the private investment and fully support the growth and success of the Vizhinjam Port.

“Vizhinjam is central to the future of Keralam’s economy, jobs, investment and development. That is why it was a key part of the BJP/NDA’s manifesto for #VikasitaKeralam. Private investment is essential for Keralam’s future. Vizhinjam Port is Keralam’s biggest Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project. It was justified in the public interest. Now the State Government must quantify those benefits,” he wrote.

While speaking to mediapersons, the BJP leader said that the Vizhinjam Port project has “come to fruition because of the support” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government.

“The port operator, Mr Adani, has indicated that they are bringing in a foreign investor. There is a controversy that has been raised by the state government that the Adani promoters or the Adani company have not sought their approval, which is mandatory in the contract between the state and the port operator. First of all, we find it very hard to believe that the state is ignorant of such a move or that the port operator will not seek a mandatory approval from the state government. Having said that, our view on this is very simple. We welcome private investment into the state. We welcome the growth and the success of the Vizhinjam port,” ANI quoted him as saying.

He added, “We consider it important. But we also believe that the concept of public interest that was used to justify this port project in 2015 by the Congress government must be quantified…”

This comes after the Kerala Chief Minister on Thursday expressed his administration’s displeasure to APSEZ over the announcement to transfer 49 per cent shares in Vizhinjam port to Switzerland-based shipping company MSC without informing the state government, PTI reported.

According to a statement issued by his office, Satheesan conveyed the government’s displeasure to Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), which on Tuesday had announced that the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world’s largest shipping and logistics group, would acquire a 49 per cent stake in Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Limited (AVPPL) for nearly $1.4 billion.
