Three trustees of a temple in Porbandar have lynched a hawker to death merely on suspicion that he might have stolen the donation box from their premises, barely a kilometre away from Mahatma Gandhi’s birthplace Kirti Mandir.
Shyam Bathiya, 35, who made a living by selling phenyl and bathroom cleaning acids, was passing by the Vachhra Dada temple on Thursday night.

Three trustees of the temple were then discussing the theft of the donation box the previous day. They suspected the phenyl seller to have committed the theft and caught hold of him, demanding that he confess to the crime.
After beating him up severely with sticks and iron rods, the temple trustees informed the police that the donation box thief had been caught.
He succumbed to his injuries soon after being shifted to the police station with serious injuries.
Though the entire episode was recorded in the CCTV cameras installed in the temple, the temple trustees have deleted all the footage. The temple trustees are now absconding.
