A teacher died after bravely saving two of his students from a watery grave near Smashana bathing ghat on Mahanadi river at Kantilo under Khandapara block in Nayagarh district on Wednesday.

The 32-year-old brave teacher, who sacrificed his life to save two kids, has been identified as Saroj Kumar Das. His native Sankhapada village under Mahakalapada block in Kendrapara district plunged into deep mourning after the tragic demise of Das.

Das, a teacher at a private coaching centre, had gone to Nilamadhav in Kantilo on a picnic trip along with fellow teachers and students when the mishap took place.

Two students while taking a bath were swept by the strong current of the river water. Seeing the children in distressed condition, he plunged into water and managed to save the duo. However, he got stuck in the murky waters and drowned.

The locals fished out the body and he was brought dead to hospital. Police have registered an unnatural death (UD) case in this connection.
