The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered a nationwide stay on the Centre’s cattle-slaughter ban rules rolled out on May 29.
Madras HC's stay on Centre's notification on sale of cattle including cows for slaughter will continue till further hearing and would cover entire country, the apex court observed.
Saying that livelihood cannot be subjected to uncertainties, the top court bench comprising Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar said the government will tweak the rules and will re-notify the public regarding the cattle-slaughter ban.

The Centre in its response to the top court said the amendments to the notification on cattle sale would be re-notified after considering suggestions.
On May 29, the Central government's notification, titled Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2017, stated that no one can bring cattle to an animal market unless he or she has furnished a written declaration that the cattle will not be sold for the purpose of slaughter.
In the last hearing, the apex court had issued a notice to the central government while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by a Hyderabad based NGO.
The Madras High Court on May 30 stayed the notification, which was challenged for violating an individual’s right to choice of food.
