Somnath Amrut Mahotsav: Here’s how Somnath Temple marks 75 years of reconstruction

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, May 11, is participating in the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav at the sacred Somnath Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and a symbol of India’s enduring faith and civilisational heritage.

Notably, the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav marks 75 years since the inauguration of the restored temple. The celebrations commemorate the temple’s restoration as well as its inauguration by India’s first President, Dr Rajendra Prasad, in 1951.

Located on the Arabian Sea coast in Prabhas Patan, the historic temple holds significant religious importance in Hindu tradition and is highly regarded as a symbol of faith and cultural heritage.

The celebrations taking place on Monday have been organised to mark 75 years since the reconstructed temple was formally inaugurated after India’s independence.

Somnath @75: Why the celebrations?

Over centuries, the temple has witnessed multiple phases of construction, with ancient traditions describing successive temples built through different materials, symbolising renewal and continuity.

Notably, the temple’s most turbulent phase began in the 11th century. In January 1026, it saw its first recorded attack by invaders, which marked the beginning of a long period during which the temple was repeatedly destroyed between the 11th and 18th centuries.

However, every time it was destroyed, devotees and kings came forward to rebuild it.

After Independence, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel visited the ruins of Somnath and expressed his determination to rebuild the temple. At that time, his vision was deeply rooted in the belief that its reconstruction was essential for restoring India’s cultural confidence.

Soon after, the reconstruction was undertaken with public participation and national resolve, while the present temple was constructed in the Kailash Mahameru Prasad architectural style.

Dr Rajendra Prasad ceremonially consecrated the temple on May 11, 1951. Now after 75 years, the Somnath Temple continues to stand tall as a symbol of national pride and spiritual endurance.
