Ramzan ceasefire improved law and order: J-K police chief SP Vaid

J-K DGP SP Vaid

Jammu-Kashmir DGP SP Vaid on Tuesday said that the law and order situation in the state has improved due to a ceasefire in the holy month of Ramzan.

”The Ramzan ceasefire has been successful thus far. The initiative of Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) has helped in a general improvement in law and order,” SP Vaid wrote on Twitter.

“The situation especially in south Kashmir has eased and is serving as a confidence-building measure for families who want their boys to return back home,” SP Vaid added.

The statement comes at a time when some voices in the state and outside are saying the Ramzan ceasefire would help militants re-group and reframe their strategies.

On 16 May, the Central government ordered security forces not to launch counter-terror operations during Ramzan but said they reserve the right to retaliate if attacked.

The government said the decision was taken to help peace-loving Muslims observe Ramzan in a peaceful environment.

The announcement was made two days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s visit to the state on 19 May.

Besides, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Tuesday that the security forces have a free hand to respond as they deem fit if the neighbouring country continued an offensive against India. His remarks came after Pakistani Rangers continued shelling on the international border (IB) in Jammu-Kashmir in Jammu and Samba districts targeting 30 BSF outposts and some two dozen villages in the area since Monday.
