Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday issued a passionate plea to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding swift action to address the catastrophic floods ravaging Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. With thousands of families struggling to protect their homes and loved ones, Gandhi emphasised the urgent need for a special relief package, particularly for farmers, and accelerated rescue operations.
“Modi Ji, the floods in Punjab have caused devastating destruction. The situation in Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal, and Uttarakhand is also extremely worrying. In such difficult times, your attention and the active help of the central government are extremely necessary,” Gandhi, who is also the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, said in a post on X.

The situation on the ground remains grim, with heavy rainfall and cloudbursts triggering flash floods in multiple northern states. In Punjab, 29 people have reportedly died, and thousands have been displaced in what officials are calling the worst flood in recent history. Entire villages are submerged, and the state machinery is under tremendous pressure to rescue marooned residents. Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh have also reported widespread destruction, with collapsed roads, snapped power lines, and significant damage to infrastructure.
