Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of corruption and authoritarianism.

Speaking to party workers in Chaygaon, Gandhi alleged that Sarma had abandoned the role of an elected chief minister and was instead acting like a monarch serving the interests of corporate giants.

“The Chief Minister here doesn’t see himself as a public servant, but as a King of Assam,” Gandhi declared. “And this King spends 24 hours a day handing over your money and land to either Ambani or Adani.”

Asserting that Sarma would soon face legal consequences, Gandhi claimed that the Congress would bring accountability and justice if voted to power.

“If you listen to him on TV, you’ll hear the fear in his voice. He speaks loudly, but that’s just a cover—he knows his time is up. Congress’ babbar sher [lions] will send him to jail. No one, not even Modi or Amit Shah, will be able to protect him from the consequences of his corruption,” Gandhi said, rallying party workers ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

In a swift and pointed response on the social media platform X, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma dismissed Gandhi’s remarks and drew attention to the Congress leader’s ongoing legal issues.

“Take it in writing, Himanta Biswa Sarma will definitely be sent to jail — these were the exact words spoken by the Leader of the Opposition, Shri Rahul Gandhi, during a closed-door meeting with Congress’ Political Affairs Committee in Assam,” Sarma posted.

“He came all the way to Assam just to say this, while conveniently ignoring that he himself is out on bail in multiple criminal cases. My best wishes to you, Rahul ji — enjoy Assam’s hospitality while you’re here.”

Rahul Gandhi used his Chaygaon speech not just to attack the BJP but also to boost the morale of the Congress party’s state unit, which is undergoing an organizational restructuring. Praising local leaders and the grassroots cadre, Gandhi called them the “tigers and tigresses” of the Congress and emphasized the party’s ideology of unity over division.

“You are our backbone. The Congress ideology is in your DNA,” he told workers. “There’s a battle of ideologies in the country — one that seeks to divide, and ours, which seeks to unite.”

He also claimed that Congress was on track to return to power in Assam, crediting the work of newly appointed state leaders, including MP Gaurav Gogoi.

“We’ve built a new team. Gaurav and others have started the work. Assam will see the results soon,” Gandhi added.

Rahul Gandhi was joined by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge for the one-day tour of Assam. According to party sources, both leaders held closed-door meetings with the state’s MPs, MLAs, district presidents, and other key office-bearers to devise a strategy for the upcoming elections.
