Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday intensified his criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that the Centre was asking citizens to bear the consequences of its economic failures through repeated appeals for “sacrifice.”

‎In a post on social media platform X, Gandhi referred to remarks attributed to the Prime Minister urging people to reduce certain forms of spending and consumption amid prevailing economic challenges.

‎“Modi ji yesterday asked the public to make sacrifices — don’t buy gold, don’t travel abroad, use less petrol, reduce consumption of fertilisers and edible oil, travel by metro, and work from home,” Gandhi said.

The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha argued that such suggestions reflected deeper governance and economic issues rather than responsible policymaking.
‎“These are not suggestions — they are proof of failure,” he wrote.

Escalating his attack on the BJP-led government, Gandhi alleged that the Centre routinely shifted the responsibility for economic hardship onto ordinary people while avoiding accountability for its own decisions.

‎“In 12 years, the country has been brought to such a stage that people are being told what to buy and what not to buy, where to go and where not to go. Every time, the responsibility is shifted onto the public so that the government itself can escape accountability,” he said.

‎He also made a personal attack on the Prime Minister, stating that “running the country is no longer within the capability of a compromised PM.”

‎The remarks come against the backdrop of continuing political exchanges between the Congress and the BJP on issues related to inflation, unemployment, rising living costs and overall economic management.

While opposition parties have accused the Centre of failing to ease pressure on households, the government has defended its policies as necessary for sustaining economic growth, stability and self-reliance.
