Punjab Vigilance Bureau arrests SDO for accepting bribe of Rs 8 lakh

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB), in line with the zero-tolerance policy adopted by the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann-led Punjab government, has apprehended Sub-Divisional Officer(SDO) Ramanjot Singh, posted in the Mining Department at Derabassi in SAS Nagar district, for accepting a bribe of Rs 8 lakh.

Disclosing this here on Tuesday, an official spokesperson for the state VB said the arrest has been made following a complaint lodged on the Chief Minister’s Anti-Corruption Action Line portal.

He said that FIR No. 16 was registered against Mining Department SDO Ramanjot Singh for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 40 lakh. Thereafter, the accused SDO agreed to take a bribe of Rs 19.40 lakh. On the complainant’s request, the accused SDO accepted Rs 8 lakh as a bribe for not taking action against him for lifting soil from his land.

According to the recordings submitted by the complainant, the allegations against the accused were found to be true, he added.

In this regard, a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at VB Police Station, Mohali. Further investigation into this case is underway, he added.
