Former Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Mohammad Mustafa, accused of the murder of his son Aqil Akhtar, has alleged a political conspiracy, saying the truth will come out before the public in a few days.
Hours after Haryana Police registered the FIR against him and his wife, former minister Razia Sultana, Mustafa expressed deep sorrow over his son’s death but vowed to fight what he called “vile actions” driven by dirty politics.

“But this certainly does not mean that we cannot counter the vile actions of those with dirty politics and cheap thinking,” the former Punjab DGP said.
He argued that the registration of an FIR does not mean that someone’s guilt has been proven. “The real investigation will begin now after the FIR is registered, and in a few days, the truth will come out before the public,” he asserted.
Mustafa claimed that his son had been a drug addict and died of buprenorphine overdose.
“For 18 years since 2007, we were getting him treated for addiction including at PGIMER Chandigarh, but he would relapse. He had even set our house on fire once,” he was quoted as saying by a leading English daily.
His son Aqil was found dead at his residence in Sector 4, Panchkula. Following a post-mortem, his body was handed over to the family as the police initially ruled out foul play.
However, after videos purportedly showing Aqil surfaced on social media, an FIR was registered against Mustafa and his wife. Subsequently, Shamshudeen Chaudhary, a neighbour from Malerkotla, Punjab, filed a police complaint against the couple.
Aqeel had alleged that his father was having an affair with his wife. Mustafa, however, dismissed his allegations as a “political conspiracy”, citing another purported video in which Aqeel reportedly said that he would have been kicked out of the house, if he lived in any other household.
