Punjab Congress rift: Randhawa’s ‘compromised leader’ dig prompts sharp reaction from Warring

The cracks in the Punjab unit of the Congress party continue to widen with senior party leader and MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa taking a “compromised leader” dig at Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, prompting a sharp reaction from the state Congress president.

Speaking to reporters after holding a meeting with Congress General Secretary in-charge of Punjab, Bhupesh Baghel, Randhawa said that while the party needs unity to win next year’s crucial Assembly elections, it doesn’t need compromised leaders.

“We had a productive dialogue, acknowledging that sometimes the party must reverse certain decisions. Our demand to the leadership present today is clear. We want a Congress government in Punjab, and we want to address issues like law and order and corruption. To achieve this, we need unity within the party, but we also need leaders who speak boldly and decisively. We do not need compromised leaders,” he said.

Punjab Congress chief reacts

His remarks prompted a sharp reaction from Raja Warring, whose appointment to the post of Punjab Congress chief has resulted in an internal churning.

While Warring insisted that Randhawa had not taken his name, he suggested that some leaders in the party are in touch with the BJP and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

“Who is compromised? Has he taken any names? If not, why are you people pointing it at me? Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa is absolutely right. If anyone is compromised, they cannot stay with us. We do not need any sleeper cells or compromised leaders in our party,” he told reporters in Chandigarh.

He continued, “Many leaders are accused of meeting BJP leaders, some leaders from Uttar Pradesh, and at times leaders from the ‘Jhadu’ party (Aam Aadmi Party). Punjab does not need a compromised leader.”

Warring said that he stayed with Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa for 4.5 to 5 years and if either of them had been compromised, they would not have remained together for such a long time.

While admitting issues between him and Randhawa, Warring said that they will soon be sorted.

“Whatever issues exist between me and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, we will sort them out soon,” he added.I corrected only the marked errors and did not make any other changes.
