Congress MP from Prayagraj, Ujjwal Raman Singh on Monday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reminding him of the recent Dharali incident in Uttarakhand, and urged him to take necessary steps for the conservation of the Ganga Himalayan region in view of the horror of climate change.

“… if we do not stop the exploitation of the Himalayan region, resources, forests, rivers, water sources and mountains, it will not only harm the present but also the future generations,” the letter read.

Singh urged the PM that Parliament needs to take immediate cognizance of these concerns. He demanded that the catchment area of the Himalayan valleys should be identified and declared as eco-sensitive zones in view of the water and food security of the coming generations, just like the Eco-sensitive Zone Notification of 2012.

He further argued that development work should be done according to the capacity of all the valleys. Especially in the high Himalayan zone, sensitive areas should be identified and residents living here should be provided subsidies in solar energy and gas under Green Bonus.

The Prayagraj MP said preparations are being made to cut thousands of deodar trees in the area around Dharali, which has been declared an eco-sensitive zone by the Center in 2012.

If this is the condition of the sensitive zone of the Himalayas, what will be the condition of the rest of the areas? Therefore, it is requested that the cutting of deodar trees should be stopped by repairing the roads already existing in this area, he added.
