In a major political development ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi on Wednesday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after resigning from the Indian National Congress (INC).

He formally joined the party in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state BJP president Dilip Saikia.

‘Sidelined and humiliated’: Bordoloi alleges lack of support from leadership

Bordoloi accused the Congress leadership of sidelining and mistreating him, which brought an end to his long-standing association with the party. He said his resignation was not triggered by a single issue, such as ticket allocation, but rather a combination of factors. He said that getting a ticket was not a question of life and death for him, but there were multiple issues. He stressed that holding his head high was more important for him.

Bordoloi also mentioned an incident during a Congress Election Committee meeting on March 13, where he claimed his concerns were dismissed. Pointing to the episode as a turning point in his decision to quit, he explained, “On 13th March, the Assam CEC meeting was held. I came to know that a communal leader like Imraan Masood said that everything I was talking about and saying about a candidate against whom I had given evidence of a criminal nexus was false and fabricated. Imraan Masood, in the presence of the party’s top leadership, had the audacity to say that all that Pradyut Bordoloi said was fabricated. The APCC president present there remained silent. This hurt me a lot.”

Bordoloi, currently serving his second term in the Lok Sabha, said he still has three years remaining but chose to step away despite that. “I could have continued and ignored the humiliation if I wanted to remain an MP, but I decided to leave and work,” he stated.

Congress fields Bordoloi’s son

Following Bordoloi’s resignation, Congress has fielded his son from the Margherita Assembly constituency for the upcoming Assembly polls.

Bordoloi’s exit from the Congress party comes weeks after former Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah joined the BJP after decades with the party, highlighting ongoing churn within the state unit.
