In India, Labour Day is a public holiday held on every 1 May. It is celebrated as Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas. The holiday is tied to labour movements for communist and socialist political parties.

Politicians across parties on Tuesday took to Twitter to greeted workers of the nation on the occasion of International Workers’ Day.

International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day or Workers’ Day or May Day in some countries is a celebration of labourers and the working class.

On International Workers’ Day, President Ram Nath Kovind took to Twitter to saying, “On Labour Day, greetings and good wishes to our hardworking workers, both men and women. The discipline and dedication of our countless workers continue to build our country and lay the foundations for a new India. They are our true nation builders”.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, “Labour Day greetings to every workman. On this day we celebrate contributions and achievements of workers and reiterate their rights. I wish workers the very best & applaud their contributions in the economy”.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, ” Greetings to all the workers and their families on the occasion of the International Workers’ Day”

Former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar Tejashwi Yadav said, “Greetings to all hardworking friends who contribute day in & out to make our nation and world a better place”.

On Labour Day, Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi remembered the words by Mahatma Gandhi.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said, “Salutations to all workers on the occasion of International #LabourDay. Let this day be a celebration of hardwork and dedication, and our journey together in scripting India’s new growth story”.

Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah said, “Karnataka is a national leader, thanks to our strong, dedicated workforce. This #LabourDay I want to salute all workers, who contribute to building a Nava Karnataka. May the timeless ideal of ‘Kayakave Kailasa’ inspire us to work hard for the unity & progress of our great land”.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh said, “Our workforce is the engine of our growth and prosperity. On this #LabourDay , I wish all the workers a happy and prosperous life, with the promise of ensuring gainful employment for them in our state of Punjab”.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury Sitaram Yechury on May Dau said, “Greetings on May Day. On the International day for solidarity of the working class: we redouble the resolve to oppose all anti-labour legislations being proposed by this Modi govt”.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said, “Saluting the hardwork and dedication of the people who run this country and are the workforce behind our growing economy. ”

Labour Day is known as “Kamgar Din” in Hindi, “Karmikara Dinacharane” in Kannada,”Karmika Dinotsavam in Telugu, “Kamgar Divas” in Marathi, “Uzhaipalar dhinam” in Tamil, and “Thozhilaali Dinam” in Malayalam. In North India, Labour Day is mostly not given its previous importance as a holiday now.

The first May Day celebration in India was organised in Madras (now Chennai) by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan on 1 May 1923.This was also the first time the red flag was used in India.
