Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government over Nirav Modi-PNB scam, while saying the scam was a “guide to looting India by Nirav Modi”.

Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter saying, “guide to looting India by Nirav Modi. Hug PM Modi. Be seen with him in Davos. Use that clout to: steal 12,000 crore. Slip out of the country like Mallya while the government looks the other way”.

Gandhi’s tweet came after a Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi shared a photo of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Indian CEOs at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January, which was also attended by Nirav Modi.

Gogoi had questioned in his tweet, that what are the parameters and “criteria” under which CEOs are selected to accompany PM Modi on foreign trips.

On Wednesday, Punjab National Bank (PNB), the second largest public sector bank in India, detected a $1.8 billion fraud in its Brady House Branch, in south Mumbai.

The fraud, which includes money-laundering, concerns the Firestone Diamonds group in which the CBI last week booked billionaire diamond trader and designer Nirav Modi, his wife Ami, brother Nishal and maternal uncle Mehul Choksi.

It is learnt from informed sources that that Nirav Modi wrote to PNB and other banks that he would return the outstanding money.

Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday sealed billionaire jewellery designer Nirav Modi’s house, while Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids at multiple locations, in connection with a Rs 280 crore money laundering case against him and others, following a complaint by Punjab National Bank (PNB).

Earlier this year, the CBI had registered an offence against PNB officials, Nirav Modi and his family, while the ED had filed a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The CBI has booked Modi, his brother, wife and a business partner for allegedly cheating PNB of over Rs 280.70 crore in 2017.
