Prime Minister Narendra Modi today fed cows on the lawn at his residence in New Delhi on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti.

One of the significant festivals in the Indian calendar, Makar Sankranti marks the seasonal transition. The day signals the end of the winter solstice and the beginning of longer days. The festival is known by different names in various regions. In Tamil Nadu, it is celebrated as Pongal, in Assam as Bihu, and in parts of North India as Maghi.

PM Modi had fed cows yesterday as well when he participated in the Pongal celebrations at the residence of Union Minister of State L. Murugan in the national capital yesterday. Pongal is celebrated in India and across the globe as a thanksgiving to nature, the sun, livestock, and farmers. It is customarily observed as a family celebration that epitomises abundance, appreciation, and unity.

Makar Sankranti is also associated with different traditional customs including preparing khichdi, distributing sweets made of sesame and jaggery, offering coconut laddoos, and flying colourful kites, especially in western and northern states.

On the auspicious occasion, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was seen offering the sacred Khichdi to Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath at the Gorakhnath Temple during Brahma Muhurta. He also offered prayers at the temple.

Chief Minister Adityanath extended his heartfelt greetings and best wishes to all citizens, saints, and devotees on Makar Sankranti. He said, “The festival holds a special place in India’s age-old traditions.” With Makar Sankranti, he said, the period of auspicious ceremonies resumes in the Sanatan Dharma tradition.
