Remembering Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 150th birth anniversary on Friday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that Patel had integrated the princely states into a united India, and the only “unfinished task concerning Kashmir was fulfilled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.”
Shah flagged off the “Run for Unity” to mark Patel’s 150th birth anniversary today. He said that by unifying the princely states, India’s first Home Minister strengthened the unity and security of the country. Shah highlighted that Patel was deeply dedicated to the welfare of farmers and the protection of their rights, while also caring for marginalized communities.

He added that since 2014, the government has been organizing the ‘Run for Unity’ every year on October 31 in Patel’s honor.

Shah also recalled that while the nation celebrated independence, Patel was actively monitoring naval warships to secure Lakshadweep. By sending the Navy in time and hoisting the tricolor, Patel ensured that the islands became part of India—a major post-independence contribution.
However, Shah criticized previous Congress governments for not giving due respect to the stalwart, noting that it took 41 years for Patel to be awarded the Bharat Ratna.
He further mentioned that no monument or memorial had been built to commemorate Patel’s work until Prime Minister Modi assumed office, after which the Statue of Unity was constructed in his honor, a symbol of unity sent to the world.
“It is our duty to protect the nation built by Sardar Sahib with justice and unity,” Shah added.
Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal, Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and Delhi ministers including Parvesh Verma and Manjinder Sirsa were also present on the occasion.
