Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed grief over the loss of lives in a mining accident in China’s Shanxi Province and conveyed condolences to Chinese President Xi Jinping and the people of China.
In a post on X, Modi said he was “saddened by the loss of lives” in the accident and prayed for the recovery of those still missing.
“Saddened by the loss of lives in a mining accident in Shanxi Province in China. On behalf of the people of India, my condolences to President Xi Jinping and the people of China. May the bereaved families find strength in this tragic hour. Praying for the early and safe recovery of all remaining missing persons,” the Prime Minister said.
A gas explosion at a coal mine in China has killed at least 90 people, in the country’s deadliest mining accident in recent years, reports said quoting state media. Shanxi Province is one of China’s major coal-producing regions.
State media Xinhua said 247 workers had been on duty underground when the blast ripped through the Liushenyu mine in Qinyuan county, Shanxi province, on Friday.
Local authorities in China have launched emergency response measures and investigations into the incident.
India and China have often exchanged messages of solidarity during natural disasters and industrial tragedies despite broader geopolitical differences. Modi’s message comes as rescue teams in Shanxi continue efforts to locate those unaccounted for and provide medical assistance to the injured.
