The Somanth Swabhiman Parv is a four-day programme marking 1,000 years since the first attack on the Somnath temple.
The event commemorates the temple’s destruction in January 1026 by Mahmud of Ghazni and its repeated rebuilding over centuries.
The Prime Minister is on a three-day visit to Gujarat to attend the Somnath event.
On Sunday, the Prime Minister will take part in the Shaurya Yatra organised to honour those who laid down their lives defending the Somnath Temple.
He will perform puja in the Somnath Temple and also participate in a public function marking Somnath Swabhiman Parv.
India’s faith can never be defeated: Gujarat CM
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said that the Somnath Temple reminds everyone that India’s faith can never be defeated.
He further stated that there is a remarkable zeal and devotion among the people to celebrate the Somnath Swabhiman Parv.
“Under Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s leadership, the nation stands united in remembering a thousand years of unbroken faith—while witnessing remarkable zeal and devotion among the people to celebrate #SomnathSwabhimanParv,” he wrote on X.
Modi arrives in Somnath to a rousing welcome
Earlier in the day, Modi arrived in Somnath to a rousing welcome. People lined up on both sides of the road and chanted slogans as Modi held a roadshow in the city.
“Feeling blessed to be in Somnath, a proud symbol of our civilisational courage,” the PM said, adding that he was “grateful to the people for the warm welcome.”
Modi’s visit to Somnath comes during the Somnath Swabhiman Parv being observed to mark a thousand years since the first attack on the Somnath Temple in 1026.
The temple was attacked by Mahmud of Ghazni. However, it was rebuilt in 1951 under the leadership of former Home Minister and Congress leader Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accused Rahul Gandhi of spreading panic and misinformation after the Congress leader claimed an "institutional revolt" was underway and predicted PM Modi would not remain in office for another year.
The actor told Modi that Peddi is about an evolved India and empowering villages. Modi responded by sharing a story from West Bengal about a footballer from a small village who went on to represent the country.
