PM Modi accorded red carpet welcome in China’s Tianjin; Indian diaspora greets him with chants of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tianjin, China, on Saturday to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.

Upon his arrival at the airport, Modi was accorded a red carpet welcome by senior Chinese officials.

At his hotel in Tianjin, PM Modi was welcomed with chants of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram” by the Indian diaspora, along with classical music and dance performances. Chinese artists played Indian instruments such as the sitar, santoor, and tabla.

The Prime Minister reached Tianjin from Japan, the second and final stop of his two-nation tour. Announcing his arrival on X, Modi posted: “Landed in Tianjin, China. Looking forward to deliberations at the SCO Summit and interactions with world leaders.”

During his visit, he is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The 25th meeting of the Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) will be held on August 31 and September 1, 2025, at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to hold bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, along with several other world leaders.

India has been a member of SCO since 2017. It held the presidency of the Council of Heads of State of SCO during 2022-23.

In recent months, both countries have undertaken several measures to recalibrate their ties, which had been severely strained following the deadly clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in June 2020.

The Prime Minister last visited China in June 2018 to attend the SCO Summit, while Chinese President Xi Jinping travelled to India in October 2019 for the second “informal summit.”
