A plea in Supreme Court seeking directions to declare the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) constitutional was filed on Tuesday.

This is the first plea filed in support of the Act seeking directions to declare CAA as constitutional. The plea was filed by a Mumbai resident Puneet Kaur Dhanda through lawyer Vineet Dhanda.

It also sought directions to the Election Commission to identify and take action against the political parties spreading false rumours and violence in the country.

“The petitioner is filing the present public interest litigation as a concerned citizen over the loss of precious lives and damage to public property across the country, especially in the cities of Delhi and Ahmedabad, and states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Assam and other parts of our country,” Dhanda said in his plea.

The plea also sought action against the media houses involved in spreading false information and fuelling rumours.

“CAA is not against the spirit of the Constitution of India and in no sense against any citizen of India,” Dhanda said in the petition.

Interestingly, there were 59 petitions filed in the apex court challenging the amended law. The controversial law has triggered nationwide protests.

A bench consisting of Chief Justice SA Bobde and justices BR Gavai and Surya Kant had refused to grant a stay on the operation of the law. It listed the matter for further hearing in January.
