A senior official admitted that the state is “woefully lacking in government healthcare Centres” forcing the private and corporate healthcare units to bear the load of the transplant process.

The minister said Narasinghpur and Badamba blocks in Cuttack district, along with Dhenkanal district, are considered hotspots for chronic kidney disease. For detection of the disease, diagnostic facilities are available at medical colleges, district headquarters hospitals, and sub-divisional hospitals.

Currently, 70 hospitals across Odisha provide dialysis facilities with 513 beds, and the services are offered free of cost. Under the Gopabandhu Jana Arogya Yojana health insurance scheme, kidney patients also receive free treatment in private and corporate hospitals, he further stated.

Till date, 1,481 kidney transplants have been conducted in both the government and private healthcare units in the State, the Minister Mahaling concluded.
