Police on Friday arrested a Master Book Keeper of a Gram Panchayat in Odisha’s Kendrapara district on the charge of coercing around a dozen of women Self Help Group members to show their pigmented nevi (Moles) on their sensitive parts of bodies and video-graphing of the black moles with promise to pay them Rs 1,000 for each mole.

Pigmented nevi (moles) are growths on the skin that usually are flesh-coloured, brown or black. In the Self Help Group (SHG) system, a Master Book Keeper (MBK), who is appointed by the gram panchayat body, plays an important role in maintaining the financial records.

Kalpana Samal, the president of Ma Budhi Kankei SHG of Tentulikoli village under the Rajkanika police station, lodged an FIR in the police station on 7 June alleging that Somyaranjan Samal (25) a Master Book Keeper of the Gram Panchayat compelled them to do so.

Acting on the complaint, nd investigation was launched and a case was registered against the accused under Section 79 (criminalizes acts or words intended to insult a woman’s modesty) under BNS. The accused had fled from the village after a police complaint was lodged.

Samal was arrested today from Chandanpur village under Nemal police station in Cuttack district> He was later sent to jail after the local court rejected his bail application, said the Inspector-In-Charge of Rajkanika police station, Sanjay Kumar Mallick.
