Rohini Acharya, the daughter of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, on Saturday announced that she is quitting active politics. In a post on X, Rohini said she is also severing ties with her family.

The big announcement came just a day after the RJD suffered one of its worst drubbings in the Bihar Assembly Elections, ending the 2025 contest with just 25 seats in the 243-member state Legislative Assembly.

Stating that she is taking all the blame for the defeat, Rohini said she has been asked to do so by Sanjay Yadav and Rameez.

“I’m quitting politics and I’m disowning my family … This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez had asked me to do …nd I’m taking all the blame’s (sic),” she posed on X.

Interestingly, Rohini had first only posted about quitting politics and severing ties with the family. However, she later edited her post to add the names of Sanjay Yadav and Rameez.

Who are Sanjay Yadav and Rameez?

It may be noted that Sanjay Yadav is an RJD leader and Rajya Sabha MP who is considered close to Tejashwi Yadav. As per reports, Sanjay also plays a crucial role in deciding the RJD’s political and election strategy.

That all was not well between Rohini and Sanjay was also clear during the ‘Voter Adhikaar Yatra’ in the run up to the Bihar elections. When a social media user had questioned Sanjay Yadav’s seating position on the campaign bus, Rohini had reshared that post, triggering speculations.

Rameez too is considered close to Tejashwi, but it was not clear if he holds any formal post in the RJD.

‘Not all well in RJD’

Rohini had a few months back in a social media post indicated that not all was well between her and the family. Rohini, who had donated one of her kidneys to her father Lalu Prasad, had written on X that she had always fulfilled her duty as a daughter and sister and would continue to do so. However, she had added that self-respect was very important for her, and she had no ambitions for a political role or post.

Rohini had made her political debut in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and had contested from RJD stronghold Saran, but had lost the election.

Rohini’s decision comes as a fresh setback to the Lalu Yadav family and indicates not all is well within the RJD.

Lalu’s elder son Tej Pratap has already left the party and formed his own Janshakti Janata Dal, which contested the Bihar election but failed to win a seat. Tej Pratap also lost his election from Mahua.
