Why a 200-year-old mosque in Varanasi was demolished in the middle of the night
Authorities carried out a heavily guarded overnight operation in Varanasi as land was cleared for an ambitious transport hub project linked to Kashi railway station.
The probe has also uncovered a digital trail aimed at amplifying the unrest. Reportedly, several fake WhatsApp groups were created to spread rumours, including false claims of casualties, to incite panic and draw more people into the violence.

Fresh details emerging from the investigation into the April 13 violence in Noida suggest the clashes were far from spontaneous, with police sources indicating a “meticulously orchestrated conspiracy” behind what began as a workers’ protest over minimum wages but quickly turned into arson and street violence.
According to top sources in the Uttar Pradesh Police, preliminary findings point to the involvement of a “trained militia” that allegedly infiltrated the workers’ agitation and escalated it deliberately. What started as a wage protest is now being viewed as a coordinated attempt to trigger unrest.

Investigators believe the same network may not be limited to Noida, with possible links traced to similar activities in Faridabad, raising concerns about a wider, organised operational presence.

The crackdown has intensified, with more than 350 suspects detained so far and over 200 formally arrested. Several among them are accused of carrying out arson in what officials describe as a “methodical and pre-planned manner.”
Police sources added that at least five to six individuals have been identified as the main perpetrators who allegedly executed critical parts of the violence.
Investigators say the violence followed a clear pattern rather than random outbreaks. Members of the group allegedly transported petrol from multiple locations and targeted specific hotspots to set vehicles on fire.
Officials referred to the movement of these individuals as “structured and coordinated,” with operatives shifting between locations in a way that resembled trained units executing a plan. The sequence of events, sources said, indicates intent to create disruption across multiple points simultaneously.
The probe has also uncovered a digital trail aimed at amplifying the unrest. Sources said several fake WhatsApp groups were created to spread rumours, including false claims of casualties, to incite panic and draw more people into the violence.
Police Commissioner Laxmi Singh said, ”There are some social media accounts that have been created recently, through which these calls were made, inciting workers and provoking them to turn violent or engage in arson…”

Police cyber teams have since stepped in, tracing the origin of these messages, identifying the networks involved, and securing digital evidence. Authorities say several such channels were neutralised before they could escalate tensions further.
Notably, despite the state government announcing a wage hike for workers, protests continued today at the Hosiery Complex in Phase 2, with a heavy police presence on the ground.
