Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said on Monday that there is no meeting scheduled between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan at the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.

“There is no meeting which is being organised between Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, at SCO Summit. There is nothing more that we can add at this stage,” he said at a press conference in New Delhi.

At the same time, Gitesh Sharma, Secretary (West), MEA, said that PM Modi will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the summit.

“There will be a bilateral meeting between PM Modi and President Putin, and between PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of SCO Summit,” he said.

The MEA had ruled out the possibility of a meeting between PM Modi and Khan in its media briefing on 6 June.

PM Modi’s meeting with the Russian President and the Chinese president will be his first since his coming to power a second time.

The SCO Summit will be held in Kyrgyzstan’s Bishkek on 13-14 June. Pak PM Khan will be attending the summit.

India and Pakistan became members of the China-led SCO together in 2017. The economic and security bloc has five other countries. Together the SCO represents 20 per cent of the global GDP.

All eyes will be on PM Modi’s meeting with Xi, which comes ahead of a scheduled informal summit in Indian – their second since the Wuhan summit last year.

The MEA had in May said that India and China are holding talks to finalise the date and venue for the 2019 informal summit meeting between PM Modi and the Chinese President.

Speculations are that the meeting between the two leaders might be held in PM Modi’s constituency Varanasi on 11 October.
