At least two people were killed and three others sustained injuries in a blast at an oxygen plant in Industrial Area, Phase 9 of Mohali in Punjab, the office of Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate (DC&DM) said on Wednesday.

The blast triggered panic in the area, prompting a swift rescue operation by the teams of police, medical, and district administration personnel.

“A blast was reported today at an oxygen plant located in Industrial Area, Phase 9. Upon receiving information, medical teams, police, and district administration personnel promptly reached the site and initiated rescue operations,” the DC&DM Mohali said in a statement.

While two casualties have been confirmed, three injured individuals have been shifted to Civil Hospital, Phase 6, for treatment.

“The incident has resulted in two casualties. Additionally, three injured individuals have been shifted to Civil Hospital, Phase 6, for treatment,” the statement added.

Mohali SDM Damandeep Kaur said that the blast was caused by an oxygen cylinder explosion, which triggered a chain reaction, and nearby cylinders also exploded.

“This morning we received information about an oxygen cylinder explosion and on reaching the spot, we found that two people were casualties and some were injured. The injured have been sent to the hospital and the bodies are being taken for post-mortem. The explosion was very powerful, where one oxygen cylinder exploded, causing a chain reaction and nearby cylinders also exploded, she said, adding “Further investigation is underway.”
