Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday welcomed the decision of the Supreme Court that rejected the demand for handing over the investigation of the rape-murder of a minor girl in Kathua to the CBI and ordered the transfer of hearing of the case from Kathua to the Pathankot court in Punjab.

Soon after the Supreme Court’s order came, Mehbooba tweeted: “I welcome today’s decision of the Hon’ble Supreme Court in the Kathua case. This will go a long way to boost the morale of our @JmuKmrPolice force who in the face of great adversity has left no stone unturned to ensure that the deceased’s family gets justice”.

Mehbooba had on Sunday rejected the demand for transferring the case to CBI saying “if you don’t trust Jammu and Kashmir Police, there is no one left to be trusted in the state”. She expressed confidence in the investigation carried out by the Jammu and Kashmir Police and stated that “there is absolutely no need for a CBI inquiry”.

It is worth mentioning that the BJP with whom Mehbooba shares power in J-K, has taken a different line on the demand for CBI probe. BJP leaders, including the newly nominated deputy chief minister Kavinder Gupta had said that there was no harm in transferring the case to CBI if the people do not have trust in the charge sheet prepared by the crime branch of the J-K Police.

Two BJP ministers who were dropped from the cabinet for supporting the demand are now openly raising voice against the crime branch investigations.
