An MBBS student at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) was allegedly molested near the university library in the early hours of Tuesday.
The incident occurred while she was returning after studying with friends. Three accused, all former students from BHU’s Department of Physical Education, have been taken into custody by police and are currently under interrogation.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Kashi Zone) Gaurav Banswal confirmed that the victim raised an alarm when the trio attempted to harass her. Her fellow students confronted the men, leading to a verbal and physical altercation. A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered at Lanka Police Station under relevant sections of the BNS, and further legal proceedings are underway.
This is not an isolated case in BHU of molestation. In recent years, BHU and its surrounding areas have witnessed multiple serious incidents involving student safety, particularly of women.
A 22-year-old B.Tech student was kidnapped, gang-raped, and assaulted on campus premises in November 2023. The accused, later arrested, admitted to previous cases of stalking and molestation. The incident drew widespread protests and calls for institutional accountability.
A 20-year-old female student reported being harassed by motorbike-borne youths near agricultural ground in November 2024. Police arrested two of the suspects within a day of the complaint.
