Mass hysteria among students of a government school in the mountainous area of Bani in Jammu’s Kathua district is causing concern among the parents as well as the authorities.

About 35 students, boys and girls, started screaming and rolling on the ground in a fit of hysteria after the morning prayers on Friday causing panic among the teachers.

Before that, four to five students afflicted by hysteria had reportedly been indulging in such gestures during the previous two days.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Bani, Joginder Jasrotia, while talking to The Statesman, confirmed the incident and said that now the school was functioning smoothly.

On getting report of the incident, Jasrotia had rushed to the school and summoned doctors to examine the affected students. However, no medical problem was detected among them.

Parents of the children and leaders of the village panchayat were immediately called to the school to take care of the children.

Chief Medical Officer of Kathua, Dr Ashok Choudhary, said that doctors examined each student but did not find any problem with them.

Chief Education Officer of the district, Prem Nath, said that a special team has been constituted to look into the matter.
