The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena-led Mahayuti marked a sweeping victory in the Maharashtra civic body elections, securing a full majority in 25 out of 29 corporations, including Mumbai.
While the counting is still underway, the trends suggest that out of the total of 2,869 seats across 29 municipal corporations, the BJP has already won or is leading in 1,064 wards, while Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena has the pole position in 282 wards. The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) is leading/has won in just 109 wards. The Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP is ahead in 113 wards, whereas the Sharad Pawar-led NCP is leading in only 24 wards. The Congress has managed to stay ahead in 222 wards. In stark contrast, Raj Thackeray’s MNS is leading in only 12 wards statewide.

A total of 29 municipal corporations in the state underwent polling on 15 January, while the counting of votes took place on Friday.
PM Modi hails civic poll verdict
“Thank you, Maharashtra,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi to express gratitude towards voters after Mahayuti’s landmark victory in the civic polls. In a post on a social media platform, PM Modi highlighted that it is the NDA’s vision for development that has struck a chord with the people of the state. He assured the people of the state that the results of the state municipal corporation elections will further escalate the pace of development in Maharashtra.
PM Modi also lauded NDA workers for working tirelessly among people across the state, and effectively countering the lies spread by the Opposition.
BMC polls: BJP-Shiv Sena alliance win 110 seats
In the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the richest municipality of India, the results for 204 out of 227 seats have been declared. The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance has won 110 seats, closing in on the majority mark of 114. The BJP has emerged as the largest party in the BMC polls, winning 85 seats while alliance partner Shiv Sena led on 25.
The Thackeray brothers, who joined hands for the Mumbai local body polls, trailed behind at 65 seats, with Shiv Sena (UBT) doing the heavy lifting, winning 60 seats. Congress has won 19 seats, NCP (SP) one, NCP two, and others seven.
Mahayuti secures decisive mandate
In the Navi Mumbai civic body polls, the alliance secured 108 seats in the 111-member corporation, with the BJP winning 65 wards and Shiv Sena bagging 43 wards.
In Thane, the Shiv Sena winning 50 of the 131 seats. The BJP, which contested in alliance, won 30 seats. Sharad Pawar-led NCP secured around 11 seats.
Out of 78 seats in Ulhasnagar, the BJP won 37 seats, while the Shinde Sena, got 36.
In Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad, the BJP won 39 of 78 seats while Shiv Sena won 2 seats. In Jalna, the BJP-Sena crossed the majority mark by winning 53 out of 65 seats.
The BJP won 25 seats in Ahilyanagar, while Ajit Pawar’s NCP won 27, Sena won 10, Congress two and Shiv Sena (UBT) one.
In the 122-member Kalyan-Dombivli civic body, the Shinde Sena secured 55 seats, while the BJP got 51 seats.
In Kolhapur, the Mahayuti alliance won a majority, with the BJP gaining 25 seats and Shinde Sena winning 15 in the 81-member corporation.
BJP emerges single-largest party across cities
The Bharatiya Janata Party has emerged as the single-largest party in most civic bodies across cities. Notably, the party marked an absolute dominance in the mandate in urban Maharashtra.
In the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar civic body, the BJP secured 58 seats out of 115 wards, while AIMIM won 33 seats, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena followed with 12 seats.
In Panvel civic polls, saffron ruled as the BJP won 55 out of 78 seats. In Dhule and Jalgaon, it secured 50 out of 74 seats and 46 out of 75 seats, respectively.
In the 151-member Nagpur civic body, the saffron party registered a sweeping victory with 102 seats.
In Solapur and Amravati too, the BJP emerged as the single-largest party, winning 87 seats in the 102-member corporation and 25 seats in the 87-member civic body, respectively.
In Nashik, the BJP won 72 seats in the 122-member civic body.
In the 165-member Pune Municipal Corporation, the party won 123 seats.
Fadnavis promises ‘BJP mayor in Mumbai’
Maharashtra Chief Minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis credited the “development agenda” for the landmark victory in the civic body elections. He stated that the alliance will form mayors in 25 of 29 Municipal Corporations. Fadnavis said that the results reflect public support for the Mahayuti alliance’s governance and also announced that the Mahayuti flag would be unfurled at the BMC headquarters to mark the alliance’s success in Mumbai and stated that Mumbai will get a BJP mayor.
Addressing the BJP workers at the party office in Mumbai, Devendra Fadnavis “bowed down” to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Dr BR Ambedkar and Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray, while hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for the victory in the local body elections.
He further said, “I want to advise all BJP workers that they must keep this in mind that when we have been elected by the voters now we have even bigger responsibility to behave ourselves, and we should not be swept away by this victory, and we should be responsible about this victory because this victory has come to us due to the vision of development of PM Modi. Before coming here, I called Eknath Shinde ji, and I congratulate him, as Mahayuti we have emerged victorious.”
After the BJP-ShivSena historic victory, party workers and supporters were seen celebrating across the state.
