Kolkata Police has suspended officer-in-charge of Kalighat police station, Goutam Das, after he shared a photograph of himself on social media brandishing a firearm.

A senior officer of the Kolkata Police said that Das is being replaced by Chameli Mukhopadhyay, who was posted in Ultadanga police station.

This comes after a compaint was lodged by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) to the Election Commission and the Kolkata Police headquarters after Das uploaded a photograph of himself posing with a rifle inside his officer alongwith the caption, “Ready for new assignment”.

Notably, West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee’s residence is in the Kalighat area.

After Das’ Facebook post went viral on the internet, Kolkata Police took cognisance of the issue and suspended him.

Earlier, the poll panel had effected a series of administrative reshuffle in West Bengal to prevent law and order situation as well as to ensure transparency in the 2026 Assembly elections. Goutam Das, who was earlier the inspector with the special branch, was posted as the officer-in-charge of Kalighat police station.

Voting for the West Bengal Assembly elections was held across two phases on April 23 and April 29. The counting of votes will be done on May 4.
