Congress leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday demanded a CBI investigation into the death of Siddharth, a second-year student of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) at Pookode campus in Wayanad.

In a letter to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Rahul Gandhi said the tragic death of Siddhartha after days of gruesome torture at the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University at Pookode campus in Wayanad has shocked our collective conscience.

Stating that the assailants are active workers of SFI, Rahul Gandhi said that the university administration as well as the law enforcement agencies sought to shield the perpetrators instead of bringing them to book.

The fact that the accused were arrested only after a massive public outcry has eroded faith in the investigation itself. There are also doubts about the contents of the police remand report, he said.

Reminding the government that it has a moral duty to act impartially in this situation, Rahul Gandhi demanded a CBI inquiry into Siddharth’s death.

Siddhartha (20) was found hanging in his hostel bathroom at Pookode on February 18. The police have arrested 18 students including SFI Unit President and Secretary in connection with the death of Siddhartha.

Siddhartha ’s father T Jayaprakash said the SFI workers had locked his son inside a hostel room. Siddhartha was tortured there for three days, resulting in his death, he said. “He was deprived of water and food all these days. They fatally beat him up and later hanged his body,” Jayaprakash said.
