Congress leader Jairam Ramesh Saturday criticized the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh for its stance on the Quit India Movement, the pivotal moment in India’s struggle for independence.
On August 8, 1942, the All India Congress Committee passed the historic Quit India resolution, and Mahatma Gandhi delivered his iconic “Do or Die” speech, calling for an end to British rule in India.

In a statement posted on handle X, Ramesh pointed out that while the Congress leadership, including Gandhi, Nehru, Patel, and others, were imprisoned for their participation in the movement, the RSS actively opposed the Quit India Movement.
This opposition was seen as a significant deviation from the nationalist sentiment that defined the era.
The Quit India Movement was launched during a time when India’s freedom struggle was gaining momentum.
The movement’s impact was felt across the country, with people from all walks of life participating in protests and demonstrations.
Ramesh’s remarks highlight the RSS’s differing stance during this period and its implications for India’s struggle for independence.
“While the entire Congress leadership languished in jail and while the entire nation was stirred, the RSS brotherhood actively opposed the Quit India movement. Seven years later, it was to oppose the Constitution of India as well,” Ramesh stated, emphasizing the RSS’s historical opposition to key moments in India’s freedom struggle and its subsequent political development.
