India hails women’s hockey team for Asia Cup win after 13 years

Congratulatory messages poured in for the Indian women’s hockey team, after they defeated China 5-4 via penalty shootout in a nail-biting Asia Cup final on Sunday and also qualified for next year’s World Cup.

The triumph of the Indian women’s team follows the Asia Cup victory of the men’s side last month.

This is India’s second Women’s Asia Cup title, after winning one in 2004, when they had beaten Japan in New Delhi for the trophy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the hockey team on Twitter and said, “India is delighted by their stellar performance.”

President of India Ram Nath Kovind also took to Twitter to congratulate the hockey team and said, “Now looking forward to glory in the 2018 World Cup!”

Vice President of India Venkaiah Naidu wrote a congratulatory message on twitter, saying “Congratulate Indian Women’s Hockey Team for winning Asia Cup, beating China, after 13 years.”

Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah praised the hockey team on Twitter saying, “You have filled our hearts with joy & pride.”

Actor Amitabh Bachchan expressed his joy on Twitter and said, “CONGRATULATIONS !! you make us so proud.”

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh congratulated the hockey team on Twitter as well and said, “You’ve done the nation proud!”

Former President of India Pranab Mukherjee wished the hockey team on Twitter and said that it was “a spectacular match.”

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi also congratulated the hockey team on Twitter.

Hockey India also wished the team on Twitter for winning the finals.
