Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has written a letter to his Indian counterpart PM Narendra Modi and sought resumption of dialogue between the two countries, Pakistan’s Foreign Office said in Islamabad on Thursday.

Pak PM has sought a meeting between Foreign Ministers Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Sushma Swaraj on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York later this month.

In the letter dated September 14, Khan wrote, “Building on the mutual desire for peace between our two countries, I wish to propose a meeting between Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, before the informal meeting of the SAARC foreign ministers at the sidelines of the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York.”

According to media reports, when FO Spokesman Dr Muhammad Faisal on Wednesday was asked about chances of a bilateral meeting between the FMs on the sidelines of the UNGA, he had said that while no decision had yet been taken on it yet, officials are engaged in the matter.

It is being said that Khan, in his letter to India PM, wrote that both the countries should resolve all outstanding issues, including terrorism and Kashmir, through dialogue.

Pak Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal took to Twitter and wrote, “PM has responded to PM Modi, in a positive spirit, reciprocating his sentiments. Let’s talk and resolve all issues. We await formal reaponse from India.”

After winning the election in Pakistan, Imran Khan, in his victory speech, had expressed his desire to improve relations with India.

“If they take one step towards us, we will take two, but we at least need a start,” he had said.

Last month, it was reported that PM Modi had written a letter to Imran Khan, saying that India is committed to peaceful neighbourly ties with Pakistan.

“India is looking for constructive and meaningful engagement with Pakistan,” the PM had said in the letter written on August 18.

The Prime Minister, in the letter, recalled the phone conversation with Khan in which they spoke of their shared vision to bring peace, security and prosperity in the Indian subcontinent, in order to make it free of terror and violence, and to focus on development.

PM Modi had telephoned Imran Khan after his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s victory in election and called for peace and development in the South Asian neighbourhood.

“Prime Minister spoke to Imran Khan, Chairperson of PTI and congratulated him for his party emerging as the largest political party in the National Assembly of Pakistan in the recently conducted general elections,” the External Affairs Ministry had said in a statement adding that, “Prime Minister expressed hope that democracy will take deeper roots in Pakistan.”
