Haryana’s urban transport expansion plans received a significant boost as the Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation Limited (HMRTC) reported a financial surplus and a sharp rise in metro ridership, while several Metro and Namo Bharat projects moved closer to implementation across the state.

The developments were reviewed during the 65th Board Meeting of HMRTC, chaired by Haryana Chief Secretary and Corporation Chairman Anurag Rastogi. Senior officials assessed the corporation’s financial performance and examined progress on major transit infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening connectivity in Haryana and the National Capital Region.

According to HMRTC, the corporation recorded a surplus of Rs 9.18 crore during the January-May 2026 period, compared with a deficit of Rs 1.98 crore during the corresponding period last year. Total income increased to Rs 35 crore from Rs 23.76 crore, reflecting stronger operational performance and higher earnings from commercial activities.

A major contributor to the improved financial position was the growth in non-fare revenue, which rose to Rs 16.16 crore from Rs 6.42 crore a year earlier. The increase was driven by revenue generated through advertising rights, commercial use of metro assets and business activities at stations. Fare revenue also registered growth during the period.

Despite the increase in income, expenditure remained largely stable. HMRTC’s total expenditure stood at Rs 25.82 crore, only marginally higher than the Rs 25.74 crore recorded during the same period last year.

Managing Director Chander Shekhar Khare informed the Board that public usage of the Rapid Metro network continued to grow. More than 80.76 lakh passengers travelled on the network during the first five months of 2026, compared with 73.81 lakh commuters during the corresponding period last year, reflecting a rise of over nine per cent in ridership.

Reviewing future infrastructure projects, Rastogi examined the status of several Metro and Namo Bharat corridors proposed across Haryana. Among the key projects discussed was the proposed Sector-56 Gurugram to Panchgaon Metro corridor, a 35.25-kilometre elevated route with 28 stations. Officials informed the Board that the final Detailed Project Report (DPR) had been prepared and was being placed before the Chief Minister for approval.

The Board also reviewed progress on the proposed Ballabhgarh-Palwal Metro extension, which is planned as a 30.30-kilometre corridor with 18 elevated stations. Progress on the Bahadurgarh-Asaudha Metro corridor was also discussed, with officials noting that the final ridership assessment had been completed.

Members were informed that the Haryana government had granted in-principle approval for the allocation of 10 hectares of land free of cost for the Narela-Kundli Metro extension project, a move expected to accelerate implementation of the long-pending connectivity proposal.

The meeting further reviewed the revised DPR of the Delhi-Panipat-Karnal Namo Bharat Corridor, a major regional transit project estimated to cost more than Rs 33,000 crore. Officials said the project has already secured approvals from the Public Investment Board and the Haryana government. Progress on the proposed Gurugram-Faridabad-Noida-Greater Noida Namo Bharat Corridor also came up for discussion.

Officials said the advancement of multiple Metro and Namo Bharat projects reflects Haryana’s long-term strategy to strengthen public transport infrastructure, improve regional mobility and support urban growth through integrated transit networks.

Senior officials, including Additional Chief Secretary (Town and Country Planning) Anurag Agarwal, Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority CEO P C Meena, Urban Local Bodies Commissioner and Secretary Ashok Kumar Meena, Director (Town and Country Planning) Amit Khatri, Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation Managing Director Sushil Sarwan and other officers, attended the meeting.
