Eid al-Adha, or the Festival of Sacrifice, begins on Tuesday (August 21) night. The festival, also called Bakr-id, is celebrated to mark prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son on Allah’s wish.
Legend has it Ibrahim sought to sacrifice his only son for Allah after a distinct dream. However, after seeing his devotion, Allah intervened and asked him to sacrifice a goat, instead.
In India, the festival will be celebrated from Tuesday night to Wednesday evening.
